Bite-sized troof

I have one simple message for any conservative who bitches and moans and repeats the popular-yet-groundless-on-anything-but-vague-and-hopelessly-cherry-picked-anecdotal-”evidence” meme about how all teachers are filthy Leftists indoctrinating the yoof with environmentalism, socialism, gayism, whatever: quit your job (if you have one), go to uni, get a teaching degree, and teach. Otherwise, shut the fuck up.

  1. Let’s extend that to academia as well. Or are PhDs inherently Leftist?

  2. Wanting to learn = Nazi.

  3. John Winston says:

Conservative academics exist. John Ray is a great example.

  4. Crackers says:

Honestly, I swear this only comes up because teaching people to be broad-minded is seen as a ‘leftist’ thing to do. It’s only ever rabid right-wingers who ever go on about bias in the teaching / academic professions. It’s just not something that arises much in practice, if for no other reason than that people and their views are usually more complicated than ‘left’ and ‘right’.

  5. Very true, Crackers. Also, nobody’s claiming that there are no individual cases of bias (Left and Right — that’s a given), but systemic bias?

  6. Russ says:

I’m not going to say anything about their personal hygiene.

  7. Bluie says:

Are you serious? I tried teaching for a bit and one teacher does no make one lick of difference. Until there is a change with the people who set the policy then we’ll continue to get a system that is intent on fulfilling Marx and Engles visions of educating the masses to be stinking government-dependen lefties.

  8. invig says:

Yeah its easy to forget how smelly kids are.

  9. Bangardi says:

Well said (or typed), otherwise it’s all whinger posing from fatuous ignoramuses. If you think you can do better at teaching than those who do, well then what’s stopping you?

BTW is there going to be a thread on the relevance of the cirriculum, staffing levels, educational administration and school funding as well?

  10. confessions says:

The uneducated are generally more susceptible to rightwing demagogues. If everybody was educated politicians like Sharman Stone and Pauline Hanson would never be and columnists like Bolt would cease to exist.

  11. “BTW is there going to be a thread on the relevance of the cirriculum, staffing levels, educational administration and school funding as well?”

I’ll have a think about it.

  12. Daniel says:

“quit your job (if you have one), go to uni, get a teaching degree, and teach. ”

Presumably there is an opening for teachers with a basic grasp of grammar.

  13. Ross Sharp says:

Goddamn socialist preverts pollutin’ the precious bodily fluids of the young folk with their godless deviations!!!!

  14. Jason says:

    This:

Marx and Engles visions of educating the masses to be stinking government-dependen lefties.

seems to put a significant question mark over this:

I tried teaching for a bit..

If they’re both true, I think I’m beginning to understand why your teaching career didn’t work out.

    Good post, Scott.

  15. “Conservative academics exist. John Ray is a great example.”

No doubt, he majored in literature and biology, with a minor in investigative journalism.

  16. Same goes for those conservatives who bitch about soft on crime judges.
Go on people, get yourselves law degrees, and don’t even think about doing it on HECS. It’s full fees for you fuckwits.

  17. Pevva says:

Yes Jason, but maybe Bluie taught PE?

The AIS is a hotbed of stinky government dependent lefties.

  18. MarkH says:

Dear oh dear, children…do grow up.

Don’t like the way teachers teach? Well become a teacher or STFU (shut the fuck up).
Don’t like journalistic bias? Well become a journalist or STFU.
Don’t like police violence? Well join the force or STFU.
Don’t like the war in the M-E? Well sign up and become a general or STFU.

In the adult world, we recognise that we all have a function but that doesn’t stop us critically examining the way others perform their function.

Oh…don’t like the way parents criticise teachers? Well procreate, wait 10 years and then spend ages explaining to your kids that the propaganda they’ve been fed is, well, propaganda…or STFU.

  19. Damian says:

Mark, I think the point that you (and Leon, Beck, et al) are missing is that Scott isn’t talking about someone “critically examining” the school curriculum and making reasonable, informed criticisms of the teaching profession.

The post is a response to the “meme about how all teachers are filthy Leftists indoctrinating the yoof with environmentalism, socialism, gayism, whatever”.

If you don’t see the distinction then it’s back to school with you.

  20. Got absolutely no problem with critical analysis, Mark. Also got no problem with non-teachers critically analysing teachers, Mark. I do have a problem with people’s critical analysis starting and ending with the all-teachers-are-indoctrinating-lefties meme. That’s what I said in the post.

  21. Damian’s comment was stuck in moderation and I wrote my comment before I saw and approved his.

I hereby revise my comment to: “What Damian said.”

  22. One further thing to add:

The “shut the fuck up and teach” snark is a way of saying that if these conservatives are so concerned about pernicious systemic bias then they should go into teaching and try to balance it out.

  23. boy on a bike says:

What on earth makes you think that I’d want to spend my days hanging around in a common room with the likes of you? I’d rather set fire to my own eyelids. Perhaps if the likes of you fucked off and left the profession, people of different persuasions might be tempted to join. However, so long as knobheads like you are roaming the school grounds, we’ll stay on this side of the fence.

  24. John Winston says:

    Good.

    Let the indoctrination continue!
